I did the ascending exercises and they were a great workout – but maybe too challenging. I’m playing piano, and I’m wondering if it’s because I’m very randomly changing where I’m pivoting on every scale, so there’s no real pattern. I know that I want to get to where I can do this, but wondering if I should pick a turnaround spot (eg the 4th or whatever of the scale) and pivot once I get there on every scale so that I can focus on thinking ahead. Thoughts?

Good observation. I’d say yes, pick a pivot point to stick with for awhile. I’d suggest a natural 2-3 octave range your right (or left) hand typically improvises within. Then you can build your way up to getting wider/broader.
