The Philosophy of 60 Bpm

I talk about “60 bpm” a lot. BUT… I don’t always mean sixty beats per minute. And that can be confusing. This video explains the different ways I approach the click, depending on my objective.

Takeaways:

  • By changing your relationship to the metronome or pulse (all four beats, 2+4), you change the tempo at which you’re practicing.
  • Focus on the bigger beat when playing at fast tempos (like putting the metronome on beat 3).
  • When working on technique, practice with different subdivisions of the beat (8th notes, triplets, sixteenths) over 60 BPM.
