Uniformity of Tone Character – An Exercise to Achieve a Balanced, Full Sound in All Registers

Use this tone exercise to work on matching your tone quality through all the ranges of your instrument. By subdividing in your head as you do it, you can simultaneously work on your time accuracy and feel.

Takeaways:

  • Make sure to count a few measures (1 e + a) to get the time feel and subdivision in your body before playing the horn.
  • Aim for uniformity of tone character. We’re trying to achieve a balanced tone throughout the whole chromatic range of the instrument.
  • Make this simultaneously a tone exercise and time feel exercise. By subdividing in your head you kill two birds with one stone.
