How I Practice Scales to Maximize Accuracy, Control, Range, and Dexterity

This video shows exactly how I work on major scales in my practice sessions. (I don’t always do quarter notes at 60. Often I do 8ths. But quarters is the way to really measure your accuracy.) Don’t worry about trying to get through every key, and don’t hesitate to stop and loop something when you find a technical glitch or difficult fingering. I also loop the upper and lower extremes of my range, as they are more difficult to play. Generally 3 x’s.

Takeaways:

  • Play within the range that works forĀ you. Whether that’s from low Bb to high F, or well into the altissimo, do what will yield the most effective results from the time you put in.
  • Spend more time at the extremes of your horn’s range.
  • Find technical glitches and loop them. This isn’t an exercise to rush to get through. As long as you’re ironing out glitches and trying to play with a beautiful sound and excellent technique, you’re on the right track.
