Stan Getz’s Palm Key Exercise

I’ve been practicing this exercise off and on for years. Spending five minutes a day on it at 60 BPM will greatly improve your upper register technique and help to eliminate any glitches between notes.

Takeaways:

  • Spend 3 times as long in the extremities of the horn as you do in the middle of the horn.
  • Move your fingers efficiently, keeping them as close to the horn as possible.
  • Looping an exercise like this slowly will help to get you into a great practice mindset.
  • Keep your fingers moving even when breathing.
  • Use your phone to record yourself to hear technical glitches.
